Because data centers are major investments, Google's investments provide a large amount of state and local tax revenue into the communities we call home. Will the data center cause energy bills to increase for local residents?
We know that many families are focused on simply making ends meet right now. Between the rising costs of groceries, housing, and utilities, there is a lot of pressure on Utah households. We want to make clear that we pay for 100% of the power we use, and when we build data centers, we'll cover the infrastructure needs directly driven by our growth. We sign long-term energy commitments with built-in safeguards for local residents to help ensure that the cost to serve our growth does not fall on other customers.
The facility will secretly consume millions of gallons of water
We are committed to responsible water stewardship and resource conservation. In consultation with local experts, we tailor our cooling solutions to each facility’s unique environment. We use a data-driven framework to assess local watersheds for new data centers before we build, and only consider water cooling if local resources are healthy and resilient. Google was the first major cloud provider to disclose our annual water use for our data center locations, and we’re committed to continuing to do so to ensure transparency for the communities where we invest and build. We publish our water usage in every metro in our annual Environmental Report.
The data center will produce deafening jet-engine noise and low-frequency humming 24/7.
We use high-tech, low-noise equipment, sound walls, and building setbacks to ensure we meet or exceed all local noise ordinances. Every project includes an expert acoustical study to model and minimize any impact on the surrounding area.
The data center will cause massive air pollution.
Day-to-day, a Google data center operates a lot like a large office building full of computers—which means everyday operations produce zero air emissions. We don't use smokestacks, chemical processes, or manufacturing systems that create air pollution. A Google data center actually has the same daily emissions profile as a standard office building.
